Twenty one different clubs have won the tournament over the years, almost half having won more than once, with nine-time winner Real Madrid holding the record for wins at this tournament at nine, five of those being the first five seasons the tourney was held. The tournament format is releatively simple, beginning in July with three qualifier rounds, with the remaining 16 teams joining 16 seeded teams, who are then split up into eight groups of four teams each. The final match, the one being held on Wednesday is the result of the eight group winners and the same number of runner-ups competing in the final phase of the tournament, with the top two teams competing in the finals.
